My Paper goes online to reach more readers

CHINESE freesheet My Paper has proven so popular, a website - www.mypaper.sg - has been launched to satisfy eager readers.

Despite a daily circulation of 180,000, many people say it is hard to get hold of a copy of the Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) publication because it is picked up very fast.

The online version, up since Feb 1, will allow these people and others to read the newspaper, SPH chairman Tony Tan said yesterday.

He applauded the eight-month-old paper for attracting younger readers, many of whom did not read Chinese newspapers earlier.

Citing an A.C. Nielsen survey conducted in December, Dr Tan pointed out that My Paper now has a daily readership of 280,000.

Also heartening is that 55 per cent of readers are aged between 20 and 39 - the paper’s target audience.

“For some time now, we have realised that many Singaporeans aged between 20 and 40, although Chinese-literate, are primarily English newspaper readers, and would prefer a different kind of Chinese newspaper that is easier to read,” Dr Tan said.

He was speaking at the SPH Chinese Newspaper Division’s Chinese New Year celebration held at its Toa Payoh North premises yesterday.

More than 200 staff members and guests were treated to a traditional drum performance. They also symbolically ushered in the new year by tossing the traditional lo hei or raw fish salad.

My Paper editor Goh Sin Teck pointed out, as did Dr Tan, that the publication has succeeded in drawing people who had stopped reading Chinese newspapers.

Mr Goh added: “I also get many e-mails from parents, who write in to say they are using My Paper to teach their children Chinese.”

Copies of My Paper are available at MRT stations in the Central Business District, as well as country clubs and offices. It is also available on subscription for an annual delivery charge of $96.

Said Mr Chiang Min Yu, 37, a bank administrative manager: “I’ve tried reading other Chinese papers, but my Chinese is not that good. My Paper is written in an easier style.”
